However, what is perhaps most uneven about the way Barnes is handled is the way the series frames his actions. He tells Karli Morgenthau of his nightmares in the finale, in the hopes of preventing her from killing, but the show hasn’t focused much on his actual psychology in about four hours by this point, so the exchange is more plot function than character beat. Furthermore, what leads him to finally taking this step isn’t some realization or self-actualization over the course of six episodes, but rather, a brief chat out of the blue, when Wilson makes this suggestion in the penultimate entry, and the show finally remembers that The Winter Soldier is technically a co-lead and needs some kind of resolution. The edit refuses to linger on the scene’s most difficult moments. Barnes does eventually tell Nakajima the truth in the season finale, but the show runs through this admission on fast forward: He enters Nakajima’s apartment, makes his confession and leaves within the span of a minute, with the core drama practically excised. However, this arc is practically nonexistent. This sets up a potentially powerful arc about Barnes arriving at an emotional place where he can, or perhaps must, make this admission. He can’t bring himself to admit this to Nakajima, even though the old man is in desperate need of closure. Nakajima (Ken Takemoto), whose son was one of his victims. He’s plagued by nightmares of the murders he was manipulated into committing, and in order to quiet his demons, he spends time with the elderly Mr. In its premiere episode, the show paints a haunting picture of Barnes’ state of mind. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, therefore, became the perfect opportunity to finally dig into Bucky Barnes, but apart from the first episode, the show largely relegates him to window dressing. Barnes’ most important character moments since 2014 have all been hinted at in brief post-credit snippets: the brainwashed assassin’s rediscovery of his real identity (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), his decision to freeze himself until he can be cured (Captain America: Civil War), and his journey towards healing in Wakanda (Black Panther). His teary-eyed relief while seated by a cleansing fire points at a rigorous spiritual struggle, but one that has already occurred somewhere off-screen. The fourth episode begins with a flashback to his time in Wakanda, a scene acted brilliantly by Sebastian Stan, as Barnes finally reaches a point where HYDRA’s code words no longer have control over him. The Winter Soldier, meanwhile, feels like an appendix to his own series. The nexus between his violent actions and his conflicted military outlook make him a vital part of the show’s thematic puzzle. He’s also one of the more interesting and nuanced characters in the MCU, a supposed war hero haunted by his deeds and saddled with the weight of an entire country’s expectations. His Captain America is brash, pompous, insecure and brimming with anger, and he only grows more volatile when he takes the Super Soldier Serum. It’s clear from the outset that he’s no Steve Rogers he knows this, and he responds poorly to the pressure. Agent and the Winter SoldierJohn Walker has enormous shoes to fill, both in-world and in the broader culture. Joaquín is very much the type of person the MCU's Sam would trust to do just that, allowing him to embrace his new position as the new Cap.The U.S. ![]() Sam's arc in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will likely be driven by his conflicting desires to fulfill Steve's final request and uphold his legacy as Captain America, but also his hesitancy to abandon the Falcon moniker and make sure the mantle isn't taken by someone who would fail to carry over the values he stood for. government doesn't approve of Sam being the taking on the moniker and has its own choice for the position: John Walker, aka. However, for reasons that may include the fact that Sam sided with Steve in Captain America: Civil War, the U.S. The series will pick up sometime after Steve Rogers passed the Captain America shield over to Sam in the final minutes of Avengers: Endgame. While the character's backstory would surely be tweaked for the MCU, much like Sam's was, Joaquín should fit right into the story of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. ![]()
